ITINERARY
Day 1: Cusco – Phinaya – Ruita Campsite
Morning Departure: Depart early from Cusco, heading southeast towards the picturesque village of Phinaya. This remote settlement, situated at approximately 4,700 meters (15,420 feet) above sea level, is predominantly inhabited by indigenous Quechua herders. The journey offers glimpses of traditional Andean life and stunning mountainous landscapes. Afternoon Trek: Upon arrival in Phinaya, commence a moderate 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) trek to the Ruita Campsite. The trail meanders through verdant pastures, alongside crystal-clear streams, and ascends gently towards the campsite. En route, immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the high Andes and observe local wildlife in their natural habitat. Evening: Settle into the Ruita Campsite, located at an elevation of approximately 5,100 meters (16,732 feet). Day 2: Ruita Campsite – Lake Saqracocha – Quelccaya Glacier – Cusco
Morning Ascent: After an energizing breakfast, embark on a 30-minute hike to Lake Saqracocha, also known as White Lake. The tranquil waters of the lake mirror the surrounding peaks, offering a perfect spot for reflection and photography. Glacier Exploration: Continue with a steep ascent through rugged stone cliffs, often referred to as the "guardians" of the glacier. As you climb, the imposing mass of the Quelccaya Glacier comes into view. Spanning over 44 square kilometers (17 square miles) and reaching elevations up to 5,600 meters (18,400 feet), Quelccaya stands as a testament to the Earth's climatic wonders. Take time to explore the glacier's periphery, observing its intricate ice formations and understanding its significance in global climate studies. Descent and Return: After the exploration, retrace your steps to the Ruita Campsite for a brief rest. From there, descend back to Phinaya, where transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cusco.
